The Deputy Education Officer, Wimberlygunj, underneath the Directorate of Education & Sports, efficiently organized the fifth version of the “North Bay Road Marathon” on Sunday, witnessing an enthusiastic participation of almost 450 runners from the area.
The marathon featured a ten km class for males and college boys and a 5 km class for ladies and lady college students of the Wimberlygunj Educational Zone, with the picturesque route stretching from Chunnabatta (Ram Mandir) to North Bay and again.
Ms. Chanchal Yadav, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, A & N Administration, flagged off the occasion within the presence of Mr. Vikram Singh, Director (Education). A cycle rally was additionally held following the marathon. Free T-shirts for all contributors had been sponsored by SAI, Kolkata, whereas Canara Bank, Sri Vijaya Puram supported the occasion by sponsoring money prizes.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Mr. Vinyak Azad, Principal-cum-Commissioner, Customs Preventive, West Bengal, and Ms. Banita Devi Naorem, IRS, Principal-cum-Commissioner of Income Tax, Kolkata, together with Mr. P. Abdul Basheer, Pradhan, GP Kanyapuram, and Mr. Venkat Ram Babu, Pradhan, GP Wimberlygunj.
Addressing the gathering, the Director (Education/Sports) inspired the youth to undertake sports activities as a lifestyle for improved well being and self-discipline. He emphasised that the marathon is now a month-to-month occasion and urged common participation whereas advocating a drug-free life-style. To encourage younger runners, Ms. Banita Devi Naorem offered a particular money prize to the youngest participant.
Dr. Manoharan, Deputy Education Officer, Wimberlygunj, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all supporters and contributors. Winners throughout classes had been honoured with money rewards and medals for his or her excellent performances.
