The serene waters of Nancowry lately buzzed with vitality and fierce competitors because the much-awaited “Asol Aap” Traditional Hodi Race unfolded, celebrating the wealthy cultural heritage of the Nicobar Islands.
The occasion drew enthusiastic individuals from far-flung villages reminiscent of Daring, Bunderkhadi, and Pilpillow, all converging to maintain this timeless custom alive. Spectators witnessed thrilling shows of stamina, talent, and teamwork because the paddlers raced with unmatched zeal.
A spotlight of the competitors was the inspiring participation of ladies, who paddled alongside males with equal dedication, difficult stereotypes and exemplifying group pleasure and gender equality.
In the male class, Munak emerged victorious, adopted by Pilpillow in second place and Bada Enaka securing third. Among ladies, Munak-A claimed the highest spot, with Kamorta and Munak-B ending second and third respectively.
The occasion was honoured by the presence of Commanding Officers from INS Kardip, ICG Kamorta, and CTC Nancowry and Kamorta, including status to the celebrations. Winners acquired trophies and money prizes in recognition of their efforts.
Organized beneath the steering of Mr. Amit Kale, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar, and led by Mr. Aditya Sangotra, Assistant Commissioner of Nancowry, the race not solely preserves a cherished cultural legacy but additionally fosters stronger ties among the many island’s various communities.
