Laxman Rao, Secretary of the South Andaman Rural Area Committee, highlighted the difficulties being confronted by the general public because the closure of vehicular visitors on the Chatham Bridge about three months in the past attributable to its deteriorated situation. Currently, solely two-wheelers are allowed to ply on the bridge, forcing different commuters to stroll all the stretch from Chatham Jetty to the top of the bridge.
Mr. Rao said that a lot of authorities workers, employees, college students, and sufferers touring to Sri Vijaya Puram are compelled to stroll from Chatham Jetty as much as the Police Station Junction, Chatham, inflicting appreciable hardship, particularly for these with well being points.
Although the Administration had launched a battery-operated seven-passenger shuttle service between Chatham Jetty and Chatham Police Station Junction, CPI(M) identified that just one such car is working, which is insufficient to cater to the big variety of commuters utilizing the route each day.
The CPI(M) Committee argued that the mixed weight of a seven-seater battery car and its passengers could be practically equal to that of an autorickshaw carrying two to a few passengers and a driver. Hence, if battery-operated autos are allowed to ply, autorickshaws also needs to be permitted beneath related restrictions to offer aid to the general public.
